At this point, seniors should be close to completing the college application process. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an application through the federal government for scholarships, grants, and loans. Even if you have other scholarships, grants, or loans, this is a good opportunity to see if you qualify. Scholarships and grants do not have to be repaid so there is a potential to receive more money for college if you apply. The FAFSA is awarded to students on a first come, first served basis so it is important to apply as soon as possible. Please call your guidance counselor or stop by the Guidance Office if you have any questions. Apply at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

We invite you to view the following Power Point presentations:

Official Transcripts

When completing college applications, students must request to have an official transcript sent to the college. Please request transcripts online at E-Transcripts. We recommend that students provide addresses for out of state colleges and universities.

Applications Requiring Counselor Input

When applying to colleges or for scholarships that include a required school counselor section, please allow two weeks prior to the deadline. This will give your counselor adequate time to fill out the necessary paperwork and allow adequate delivery time via the mail.

NCAA Eligibility

Junior and senior athletes that intend to participate in Division I or II athletics must be certified by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Please see Mrs. Freeman or Mrs. Lorenz for the application or visit the Web site at www.ncaa.org.

The ASU application for fall 2011 is available! Please go to the ASU Web site to apply. The application fee is still $50, and ASU will still accept application fee waivers. The Barrett Honors College application should be available around Sept 7.

ASU is implementing a $300 enrollment deposit for students applying for fall 2011. Students are required to pay this deposit when they are confident they are attending ASU. Students will not be able to confirm housing preferences, sign up for orientation, or register for classes until they have paid this deposit. Students must pay the deposited by May 1, 2011. However, students can submit the deposit as soon as they are admitted (beginning October 1). This deposit system is already in place at NAU and UA, and as a happy bonus ASU’s deposit is equal to or less than the other instate universities’ enrollment deposits (respectively). As a side note, ASU will no longer require a separate housing or orientation fee.

ASU now has a New American University Scholarship Estimator! This handy calculator can give students an idea of their eligibility for our  Dean’s, Provost’s, and President’s scholarships. Two things to remember:

  • Students should enter an ABOR GPA into the calculator - not their regular unweighted GPA from their transcripts. Remind students to only count their grades in the 16 core competency courses. As in PE will not help them get scholarships.
  • This is only an ESTIMATOR. It is not a guarantee that students will receive the scholarship this tool shows them. I say this because regardless of how many times you or I tell them that ASU only looks at their core courses when calculating GPA, students will inevitably just put their transcript GPA into the estimator and then be surprised if they do not receive the scholarship estimated.

Students planning to apply to the Barrett Honors College should do so by December 1, 2010. While Barrett’s application deadline is March 1, it is highly unlikely that ASU will admit students to this college who apply at that time. Barrett only admits 900 students each year, and they admit on a rolling admissions basis. Last year on February 26 Barrett only had 100 spaces left and received over 650 applications. We are encouraging all Arizona high school students to apply by December 1 to beat the rush of out-of-state applications.

Important Scholarship/Financial Aid Deadlines: ASU’s priority application deadline is February 1, 2011. Students who apply by this date are guaranteed to be reviewed for our merit based scholarships (you may remember in the past this was December 1). Students who want to be eligible for the President Barack Obama Scholars Program must have their FAFSA filed no later than March 1, preferably sooner.

Resumes

If you need help to write a personal resume, stop by the guidance and counseling department, and pick up examples of resumes to assist you.

Students needing a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or other faculty person, should make their request at least 2 weeks prior to the application due date. Ask in person, provide a resume and/or copy of their profile, and send a thank you note afterwards.

All males must register for selective service when they turn 18 years of age. It is a federal law to register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Failure to register is a felony, punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 or five years in prison, or both. Registration is simple: pick up the forms at the post office, or go on-line at www.sss.gov/.
